STATEMENT FROM TREASURER CURTIS PITT

Treasurer, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Curtis Pitt

“Queensland does not support the Turnbull Government’s proposal for a widening of the base or an increase to the GST.

“Hiking the GST at the same time as cutting workers’ penalty rates shows the Liberal Party is out of touch with the challenges of everyday Australians, especially here in Queensland.

“There has also been no commitment from the Federal Government to engage about restoring the $18 billion in cuts Queensland faces to health and education.

“The Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has said the GST will hurt Australian households to the tune of $4,000 per annum.

“Unfairly adding to the tax burden of low to middle income earners is not tax reform. Queenslanders can rest assured that when it comes to fairness, the Palaszczuk Labor Government will support them every step of the way.”
