More than 800 cyclists a day are expected to be safely riding high above Moggill Road on the newly opened cycle bridge.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey joined fellow cyclists in riding across the Moggill Road cycle bridge for the first time today.

“This $10 million cycle bridge is an important cross-town link and a welcome addition to Brisbane’s existing cycle network,” Mr Bailey said.

“The 218-metre-long bridge spans busy Moggill Road to seamlessly link with the popular Centenary Cycleway.

“The bridge – elevated 8.5 metres above Moggill Road – safely separates cyclists from four busy traffic lanes.

“The Palaszczuk Government has committed nearly $37 million into cycling infrastructure in 2015-16 and over the next four years we will invest more than $163 million dollars across the state.”

Mr Bailey said delivering quality cycling infrastructure, such as the Moggill Road Cycle Bridge, is important for the 1.57 million Queensland residents who ride their bike at least once in a typical year.

“Cyclists were previously forced to dismount and cross several intersections and compete with traffic from Moggill Road and the Western Freeway on and off-ramps,” he said

“Motorists will also enjoy the reduction of cycling traffic on these busy sections during peak periods.

“The bridge will help make cycling in Brisbane a safer, better connected and more attractive transport choice.”

Completion works will continue into early 2016.
