Road safety is everyone’s business – even if you’re in primary school.

That is the message Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey took to Rasmussen State School today while addressing the student assembly about the importance of road safety.

“You need to make sure you cross roads safely – use traffic lights or the school crossing supervisor, and if they aren’t available you must stop, look and listen for traffic before you step out on the road,” Mr Bailey told students.

Mr Bailey welcomed 10-year-old Calvin Tapau back to school following his recovery from injuries received when he was hit by a car in early September.

“It is wonderful to see Calvin back at school this week after receiving quite serious injuries when he was hit by a car recently,” Mr Bailey said.

“Calvin’s experience and the fact he can share his story with his school community can serve as a reminder to other students and their parents to be safe near roads and traffic.”

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said it was also a timely reminder for motorists to slow down around schools, and reduce their speed to 40km/h when in a school zone.

“Children, particularly youngsters, have the potential to be impulsive and must be watched carefully when crossing roads. It is vital drivers reduce their speed and be aware when children are around,” Mr Harper said.

“Parents and guardians also need to talk to children about road safety, make sure they understand to use a signalised crossing or a school crossing supervisor where possible.

“If they have to cross a road unsupervised, they must pay attention to the potential dangers and know to stop, look and listen, it could save their lives.”

The Palaszczuk Government and the Department of Transport and Main Roads are working with the school on road safety issues and establishing a Safe School Travel Committee.

Students at Rasmussen State School have access to a signalised crossing, which was considered the safest form of road crossing available. The school also has a school crossing supervisor, who helps the students cross safely.
