The Queensland Government is seeking to fill a vacancy on the board of Stadiums Queensland with an appointee from the Townsville region.

Minister for Sport and Racing Bill Byrne said he considered it important that the Townsville region specifically was represented on the Stadiums Queensland board.

“The Cowboys’ magnificent NRL premiership win means Townsville is the focus of a great deal of attention for a new stadium for the city,” Mr Byrne said.

“The Palaszczuk Government has made a $100 million commitment to the project and like Johnathan Thurston, we continue to call on the Federal Government to come to the table as well.

“By virtue of its role, Stadiums Queensland will be heavily involved in the ongoing management of any new stadium, so it is important that we have someone who can contribute to those discussions and that planning from a Townsville region perspective.

“In a decentralised state such as ours, it is also important that we have regional representation on the Stadiums Queensland board, and this appointment will also serve that purpose,” Mr Byrne said.

In July Mr Byrne announced appointments to the new board of Stadiums Queensland, including that of Ms Sophie Devitt as the first woman to chair the board.

Stadiums Queensland has nine venues under its control: the Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground), Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Suncorp Stadium (Brisbane Stadium), Metricon Stadium (Carrara Stadium), Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, CBUS Super Stadium (Robina Stadium), the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane and the 1300 Smiles Stadium (Townsville Stadium).

The board’s role is to provide strategic direction and oversee the performance of Stadiums Queensland in its operation and management of Queensland’s world-class venues.

In a newspaper advertisement today applications are sought from suitably experienced and skilled persons in the Townsville region for one position on the board of Stadiums Queensland for a period of up to three years.
