Townsville boaties are set to enjoy improved access and facilities with floating walkways to be installed at Saunders Beach and Bushland Beach boat ramps.

Main Roads and Ports Minister Mark Bailey was delighted in awarding a local business the coveted contract.

“Townsville based CivilPlus constructions won the $1.2 million contract and will design, build and install two new floating walkways just north of the city,” Mr Bailey said.

“The Palaszczuk Government has identified the need for upgrading access to Queensland’s waterways, that’s why we are investing more than $30 million in the Marine Infrastructure Fund over the next two years.”

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O'Rourke said the upgrade would allow for faster and improved boat launching and retrieval operations and better access for children and the elderly.

“With the increase in population in the northern suburbs of Townsville, the demand for additional boating facilities has increased and the installation of floating walkways is a great way to accommodate this,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“There are more than 23 thousand registered water vessels in Townsville, that’s one vessel for every 11 people.

“I know plenty of residents, businesses and tourists who will enjoy these upgraded facilities for many years to come.”

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the project meant important safety improvements were being delivered.

“These projects involve widening the existing ramps and installing new floating walkways to improve safety and accessibility for the community,” Mr Harper said.

“They will also allow the ramps to be used at lower tides, which assists in easing congestion at these busy locations.”

“It will also help to improve safety in an area where crocodiles and stingers are prevalent.”

Works will start on site shortly and are expected to be finished by the end of January 2016
