Queensland women and girls will have more opportunities to get active with close to $450,000 in funding announced under the State Government’s Get Out, Get Active program today.

Sport Minister Bill Byrne today announced 33 local councils will receive funding to provide local, accessible and affordable activities over the next 12 months to encourage more women and girls to participate in sport and active recreation.

Speaking at the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) “Women in Sport” breakfast, Minister Byrne said he was pleased to announce an increase in funding for the Get Out, Get Active program and was encouraged to see the program run in locations right across Queensland, from Thursday Island to the Gold Coast.

Minister Byrne said the funding allocation for this second round of Get Out, Get Active had increased from $300,000 to nearly $450,000.

“The Palaszczuk Government understands the importance of sport and recreation to leading a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

“In particular, the Government is focused on the need to foster and encourage greater participation of women and girls in sport.

“I am very supportive of this program and organisations like ACHPER which has played a pivotal role in recognising the great achievements of our female athletes and provided support and encouragement to our younger generation to truly get out and get active.”

The Queensland Government was contributing up to $20,000 towards the delivery of each activity project, with local councils also providing a funding contribution.

Get Out, Get Active is part of the government’s Start Playing, Stay Playing initiative—to encourage more women and girls across Queensland to get active for life.
