More Works commence under the Cape York Region Package

Roadtek will deliver works on three projects on Cape York to extend the seal on the Peninsula Developmental Road.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the three projects are part of the Cape York Region Package and have a combined value of $19.2 million.
“By funding the upgrade of local roads, the Cape York Region Package will improve access throughout the region and support the growth of local industry and secondary economies on Cape York. These three projects add to the work already undertaken in 2014 under the Cape York Region Package which saw a further 34 kilometres of the Peninsula Developmental Road sealed,” Mr Truss said.
Works on the four kilometre ‘South of Morehead River’ and the 4.5 kilometre ‘Sourayas Hill’ projects are due to commence from Monday 28 September 2015.
RoadTek has also started upgrading the 6 kilometre ‘South of Hann’ section of the Peninsula Developmental Road.
Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Mark Bailey said the projects will provide training, jobs and economic development opportunities for local Indigenous communities.
“An average of 57 direct jobs will be supported during the life of these three projects and RoadTek has provided plans that show it will reach targets for Indigenous training and upskilling, economic opportunities and local participation. This is a key focus on this programme and will go a long way in building capacity in the Cape,” Mr Bailey said.
Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said the three projects continue to build on the significant upgrades and sealing that have already been completed with funding provided through the Cape York Region Package.
“We’re already seeing the benefits of sealing, pavement widening, improved drainage and safety measures on the PDR. Once these additional sections are completed, travelling the route will be much safer for motorists whether they are residents, visitors or transport operators,” Mr Entsch said.
Construction on all three projects is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Cape York Region Package is a jointly funded project, with the Australian Government contributing $208.4 million and the Queensland Government $52.1 million.
