Tenders have closed and a contractor is expected to be announced in the coming months on the $189 million Eton Range realignment project.

Innovative earthwork trials have already started in a major safety and accessibility upgrade on the Peak Downs Highway.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the trial was just the start for the major infrastructure project.

“The project is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments with $189.2 million dedicated to realign the Eton Range. This important project will improve safety for all motorists on the Peak Downs Highway,” Mr Truss said.

“It will increase the efficiency and reliability of the road network as it will adequately service the region’s growing traffic demand. It will be specifically designed to safely carry road trains and over-dimensional vehicles.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey toured the site today and was pleased with how the project was progressing.

“With more than $23 million dollars invested, the Palaszczuk Government is committed to improving the safety and efficiency of this road,” Mr Bailey said.

“About 295 jobs will be directly supported over the life of the project.”

“A dedicated fauna underpass at the top of the range has been incorporated into the design which means there is a safe crossing point for koalas and other animals in the new alignment,” Mr Bailey said.

Tenders for the project closed on 30 September this year.

Construction is expected to begin early next year with the project expected to take two years, weather permitting.
