Minister for Education, Training and Employment
The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek

Residents and visitors to Brisbane will see the G20 through the eyes of local school students as part of the Children’s Billboard Project, on display throughout the city and suburbs during the event’s Cultural Celebrations.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said primary school children from 21 Brisbane schools would work with artists from not-for-profit organisation, Hands on Art, to create original artworks inspired by G20 themes that would go on display at shopping centres around Brisbane.

“This is a rare opportunity for our students to show Brisbane and our international visitors how they are creatively responding to the once-in-a-generation Leaders’ Summit,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Participating students are developing a range of individual artworks incorporating G20 curriculum themes that will be digitised and shown across the city.

“The G20 summit will provide many lasting economic benefits for Queensland and it’s good for our students to get a better understanding of this unique event in this way.”

Member for Mount Coot-tha Saxon Rice said it was great to see Bardon State School students participating in one of Queensland’s most significant events.

“I’m thrilled that local students are working together on the G20 cultural celebrations – this is an experience they’ll never forget,” Ms Rice said.

Vice President of Hands on Art, Cat Holland, said that including children’s ideas and vision of the G20 through artwork showcased the diversity of student skills within Brisbane schools.

“The artists working with the children also come from different skillsets, with some specialising in screen printing and live art shows, while others are portrait painters and chalk artists,” Ms Holland said.

The artworks can be viewed across Brisbane and suburban shopping centres from October 24 – November 16.

Around 550 students from state and public schools across Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan are involved in the project.
