The Honourable Glen Elmes

Queensland residents are invited to celebrate the unique and diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during this year’s NAIDOC Week commencing today.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said NAIDOC Week celebrations and activities across the state, offered a range of activities for Queenslanders.

Mr Elmes said the 2014 theme - Serving Country: Centenary and Beyond – recognised the contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women have made to Australia’s military effort during the past century and in conflict zones around the world.

“NAIDOC Week is a time for us all to celebrate the world’s oldest continuous culture,” Mr Elmes said.

“NAIDOC Week has been celebrated by Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people since the 1920s.

“Over time, the celebration has evolved into a week acknowledging Indigenous achievement and encouraging us to learn more about our unique Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

“As Queenslanders, it’s a reminder of the great contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make to our state every day and of their importance in our community.

“With a variety of community activities being held across Queensland specifically for NAIDOC Week, I urge people to make the most of these valuable learning opportunities in their local communities.”

Queensland residents and visitors can celebrate NAIDOC Week in their community with events being held across the state.
