A big term ahead for students and schools

Children and teachers are heading back to school today for a term that promises big things for education in Queensland.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said Term 3 was always a busy and exciting time for schools with Year 12 students preparing for the Queensland Core Skills Test in September.

The test countdown is coinciding with the Queensland Government’s drive to expand kindergartens and refurbish school buildings, as well as the development of the Queensland Education Accord – a 30-year vision for education.

“Term 3 is a busy and sometimes stressful term for our senior students and I wish them the best of luck in the coming weeks,” Mr Langbroek said.

“We’re doing all we can to raise standards in our state and with their teachers and families right behind them, I’m sure our Year 12 students will do themselves proud.”

From today, students of all ages will also be invited to have a say on the future priorities for schools as the Queensland Government develops the Queensland Education Accord.

Students can say what’s great and what they would like to change in their schools by submitting a short online video before 8 August at www.dete.qld.gov.au/educationaccord.

“Students should have a say in education as well as politicians and parents, so we’re inviting them to get involved and ensure a brighter future for the next generation,” Mr Langbroek said.

Mr Langbroek said Queensland’s youngest learners were also part of his focus with new and improved kindergarten services opening this term.

“Nineteen extra kindergarten services have already opened, creating an additional 638 kindergarten places, and six more are set to open state-wide this financial year, providing an extra 242 places,” he said.

“Our eKindy program continues to grow, which is all part of our strong plan to ensure our children can have the best possible start in life.”

The Queensland Government has also allocated an additional $100 million to schools to undertake maintenance – on top of the $200 million Advancing our Schools Maintenance fund.

There are also a number of major events involving Queensland students this term, including:

• The tenth anniversary of Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage
• The Fanfare 2014 state festival
• Year 8 to 11 students have until 19 September to enter in the 2015 Premier’s Anzac Prize
• 53rd annual Queensland Training Awards in September
• Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools
• Release of NAPLAN results.
