Government's plan drives strong employment growth

More than 65,000 jobs have been created in Queensland over the past year, according to the latest ABS Labour Force figures released today.

In an impressive result for Queensland, the State’s strong economic performance accounted for 65 per cent of all new jobs created in Australia.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said it was clear Queensland was now the nation’s standout state when it came to job creation.

“Today’s result again shows the Government’s plan to grow the economy and make it easier to do business in Queensland is working,” Mr Nicholls said.

“More than half of all jobs created in the last 12 months, on both trend and seasonally adjusted measures, were created right here in Queensland.

“Trend employment grew by 5,700 jobs in June, however the unemployment rate remained steady at 6.3 per cent due to a strengthening participation rate.

“This represents the 14th consecutive month of trend employment growth.

“Queensland was also the only mainland Australian state to record positive growth in trend workforce participation over the 12 months to June 2014.”

Mr Nicholls said the seasonally adjusted figures showed 65,200 jobs were created in Queensland in the last year.

“This represents 65 per cent of all jobs created nationwide,” he said.

Mr Nicholls said he was encouraged by the figures, but recognised more work needed to be done to ensure all Queenslanders benefited from the state’s strong economic growth.

“The State’s economy is on the cusp of strong growth but not all Queenslanders are yet sharing in that growth and we know there is more to do,” he said.

“That’s why we’ve made the strongest and smartest choice to pay down debt and free up funds for job-creating infrastructure projects.”
