The Honourable Steve Dickson

Townsville’s sports club have been big winners under the Queensland Government’s Get in the Game initiative after receiving more than $200,000 in its last funding round.

And the cash is set to keep on coming with the opening of round three of the initiative’s Get Going and Get Playing programs, launched by Minister for Recreation and Sport Steve Dickson during an Athletics North Queensland and Queensland Cricket sport session at Townsville Sports Reserve today.

“It’s great to see kids getting out and active here today – this is what Get in the Game is all about,” Mr Dickson said.

“We want a brighter future for Queensland’s children and that’s why I’ve been thrilled to see such an overwhelming response from Townsville clubs to our programs.

“In round two alone of Get in the Game, $101,534 was distributed to 13 Townsville sport and recreation clubs for equipment and training under the Get Going program and $100,000 to Tennis Townsville Inc. for court upgrades under the Get Playing program.

“The success of Get in the Game has shown just how badly grassroots sport was starved of support under Labor.”

The success of the initiative has prompted the Queensland Government to triple Get in the Game funding to more than $48 million over three years.

“More than $14.5 million dollars will be available for successful clubs under this round of Get Going and Get Playing funding,” Mr Dickson said.

“The Queensland Government is keen to encourage more families to get involved in sport as it promotes healthier lifestyles and strengthens communities.

“I have no doubt this round of Get Going and Get Playing will prove just as successful as the earlier rounds—which is exactly what the Newman Government is striving for, more clubs taking steps to drive more sport and recreation opportunities.

“I urge all Queensland sport and recreation clubs to continue the success of Get in the Game and take advantage of these funding programs,” he said.

Round three of Get Going and Get Playing will be open from 1 July until 1 September.
