The Honourable Tim Mander

Queenslanders can show their support for Brisbane’s homeless youth this Friday, by donning their daggiest jumper.

Housing Minister Tim Mander said Daggy Jumper Day was an initiative of Brisbane Youth Service and raised funds to help homeless and vulnerable young people in Brisbane.

“Earlier this year we launched the Home for Good campaign to gain a clearer picture of homelessness in our city,” Mr Mander said.

“As a result of that campaign we know that more than 235 young people and 74 young families in Brisbane are homeless on any given night.

“We’re doing what we can by revitalising frontline services but more help is always welcome.”

Mr Mander, along with Brisbane Broncos Martin Kennedy and Mitchell Dodds, made the announcement while meeting young people at Brisbane Youth Service’s Fortitude Valley hub.

“Many of these young people have never known a stable home, and have been homeless for several years,” he said.

“Brisbane Youth Service plays an important role helping young people to find appropriate housing, address their health issues and reconnect with education and employment.”

CEO of Brisbane Youth Service, Annemaree Callander said young people needed access to affordable housing and support to successfully transition to adulthood and independence.

“Our organisation is committed to helping homeless young people create positive new futures,” Ms Callander said.

Mr Mander said the Queensland Government had a strong plan for a brighter future and was committed to halving the current rate of homelessness by 2020.

“The Government currently spends around $125 million on homelessness services each year,” he said.

“That money funds a lot of great work but in the end, stopping homelessness is everyone’s responsibility.

“Daggy Jumper Day is a great way for people to get involved. We’ve all got an old jumper tucked away in the back of the cupboard somewhere.  Tomorrow is the day to drag it out, wear it with pride and raise a few dollars for a fantastic cause.”
