Queensland’s outgoing Chief Justice Paul de Jersey, AC was today recognised for his sixteen years as the State’s top judge at a Valedictory service held in his honour.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie congratulated Chief Justice de Jersey on his extraordinary contribution to the law, the Courts and the people of Queensland.

“Chief Justice de Jersey has done an impeccable job leading the Queensland justice system and it is a privilege to be marking this occasion with him today,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Over the last sixteen years, we have seen significant transformation within our justice system- administratively, technologically and culturally.

“The way in which Chief Justice de Jersey has seamlessly led the Court throughout these periods is arguably one of his greatest achievements and a testament to his leadership.

“The institution he leaves behind has been transformed by his efficient leadership and enduring personal energy.

“Before his appointment as Chief Justice, he practised as a barrister for 14 years, the last three years as Queen’s Counsel before being appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland for 13 years.

“As Head of the Supreme Court, he has worked collaboratively and effectively with no fewer than four State Premiers and nine Attorneys-General, with a professionalism and integrity that has greatly enhanced the support and standing of the Court.

“Chief Justice de Jersey is widely recognised throughout the legal community and beyond for his prodigious work ethic, progressive outlook and personal decency.

“On behalf of all Queenslanders, I thank the Chief Justice for sixteen outstanding years leading the Supreme Court and wish him well for his future as Governor of Queensland.”

Chief Justice de Jersey’s tenure as head of the Supreme Court will conclude at midnight July 7 2014. He will be sworn in as the 26th Governor of Queensland on 29 July 2014.
