The Honourable Campbell Newman

Premier Campbell Newman today announced Richard Bingham would become the Queensland Integrity Commissioner from 1 July 2014.

Mr Newman said Mr Bingham came to the role after a long and distinguished career in key public administration positions in South Australia and Tasmania.

“The Integrity Commissioner has an important role providing advice to politicians and public servants about integrity and ethics issues and to maintain the lobbyists register,” Mr Newman said.

“Mr Bingham brings a wealth of experience to the role, serving as South Australia’s State Ombudsman for the past five years and before that as the Chairman of the Tasmanian Electoral Commission and Secretary of the Tasmanian Department of Justice.”

Mr Newman said the Queensland Government had promised at the election to restore accountability and transparency and had delivered through a range of initiatives.

“Our Government is the first in Australia to publicly release the diaries of all Ministers, while we also made lying to Parliament illegal again,” he said.

“Our open data initiative is making unprecedented amounts of government information available to the public and private sector, while we have made Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee meetings open to the public for the first time.

“We published our election commitments and we are reporting back to the community every six months to tell them how we’re delivering them.

“Under our Government, Queensland is not only open for business, but we’re also open and accountable.”

Mr Newman thanked outgoing Integrity Commissioner Dr David Solomon for his service during his five year term, and wished him well for the future.
