State beefs up Townsville’s flood defences

North Ward will soon be better protected from flooding through the Newman Government’s record investment in flood and disaster mitigation projects to protect Queensland communities.

Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli said the $7 million project would protect more than 100 homes from tidal surge and stormwater flooding.

“The project includes a tidal barrier and stormwater drainage upgrades designed to cope with a one in 100 year event,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“We promised to work with the local council to improve Townsville’s flood defences and we are delivering.”

Works will include installing a tidal barrier at the Ryan Street canal, improving the Mitchell Street and Howitt Street intersection and upgrades to underground stormwater systems in Howitt Street and Rose Street.

The Queensland Government is contributing $1.1 million through Royalties for the Regions towards the project.

A second project to undertake a detailed floor level survey of the flood risk to buildings throughout the city is also being funded with a $536,000 grant from the Local Government Floods Subsidy program.

“Our strong plan to protect Queensland communities means we are working with local councils to literally move heaven and earth to protect and prepare homes and livelihoods,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“It’s work that should have happened a long time ago, but Labor had no plan or policies for Queensland

“Queenslanders have been pushed to the brink in the past few years and we are doing everything we can to not only protect them but make them stronger.

“The works will also provide a much-needed financial boost to communities through jobs and lower insurance premiums.

“Disasters can strike at any time but the Newman Government’s strong plan to protect communities for the long term will ensure a brighter future for all Queenslanders.”
