Funding boost for alcohol and drug services

Queenslanders who battle alcohol and drug misuse will achieve better health outcomes with the Queensland Government providing $27.9 million in funding to support programs over the next three years.

Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg said funding would be allocated under a new process to ensure resources are allocated where they are most needed.

‘‘This Government is committed to supporting those Queenslanders who battle substance use and assist them to live healthier lives,” Mr Springborg said.

“The new funding allocation process has seen an expert panel determine priorities in line with the National Drug Strategy 2010-15, to ensure the money and support get to those who need it most.

“This is a big advance over the lax administrative system of the Labor Party that facilitated ‘grants’ to the infamous fake Tahitian prince.

“The funding will support police and court diversion programs, as well as other preventative strategies.

“Of the 45 offers received to date, the panel has allocated $9.3 million a year to 12 organisations including Queensland Injectors Health Network Limited, Community Services Tablelands Inc and Care Connect Limited.

“Under the new arrangements, clients who receive services from unsuccessful organisations will be provided with the support they need to transition to a new program if required.

“In some cases, the provision of three months’ funding will be provided to unsuccessful organisations, who will develop transition plans and exit strategies for clients to ensure that the transition of care is seamless.

“Our priority will be to ensure clients continue to receive the care they need when and where they need it most.”

Funding for residential rehabilitation services, suitable for people with medium or high dependence and care needs, will continue under current arrangements.
