Brisbane State High school students are set to benefit from a new state-of-the-art learning facility as part of a major redevelopment at the school.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the new facilities would feature 40 classrooms, an arts centre, staff centre, tuckshop and other essential amenities.

“The multi-storey complex is part of a $60.5 million project due for completion at the start of the 2016 school year – State High’s 95th anniversary,” Mr Langbroek said

“The complex will accommodate approximately 850 students and enable the school to cater for a total enrolment of up to 3,000 students.

“The redevelopment is part of this government’s strong plan to provide the best possible environment for school students.

“The new building will support the important role Brisbane State High School has played in providing students with great academic, cultural and sporting opportunities for the past 93 years.”

Mr Langbroek said the Newman Government’s investment in Brisbane State High School was an investment in our state’s future.

“Everything we do in education is directed towards better student outcomes and investing in school infrastructure is vital,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Providing our students with specialist facilities in a state-of-the-art learning environment ensures they have the best opportunity to learn and succeed in their studies, now and into a bright future.”

Mr Langbroek said Broad Construction Services Queensland was awarded the contract for the design and construction of the building which will cater for future growth including the move of Year 7 to high school in 2015.

“During the redevelopment, Year 7 students will move into an interim, designated precinct on the school’s current Edmondstone Street site,” Mr Langbroek said.

“This precinct will ensure the school has a specialist space for the Year 7 students moving into secondary next year.

“Three blocks have been demolished to make way for the start of construction this month and temporary buildings located on the oval are already being used as classrooms.

“The redevelopment will make best use of the school’s urban location and ensure we meet the needs of students and teachers well into the future.”

Brisbane State High School is one of Queensland’s 80 Independent Public Schools and was established in 1921 as the first academic state high school in Queensland.
