The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Young burns victims will benefit from better research and treatment, after more than fifty firefighters crossed the finishing line on an 835 kilometre fundraising journey from Roma.

Minister for Fire, and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey said efforts like this help the Government deliver on its election promise to revitalise frontline services.

“Fifty firefighters and volunteers have shown their dedication to young Queenslanders suffering burns related injuries by riding more than 800 kilometres to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation,” Mr Dempsey said.

“In the future, the funds they have raised through their efforts today will go on to assist countless young boys and girls as they receive vital medical treatment.

“Queensland is a great state, and once again this event displays a great opportunity for the men and women of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to give back to the community they serve.

“I want to thank all those riders who have dedicated months to training, and the past week to riding from Roma to Brisbane to benefit others.

“We have a strong plan for a brighter future and welcome efforts like this to raise vital funds.”

Mr Dempsey said the event, which is entering its eighth year of fundraising, was an excellent opportunity for all of Queensland to support ground breaking medical research.

“I would urge any Queenslander who wants to support this event and the cause to donate through the Bike 4 Burns team,” he said.

“The team to date during 2014 has raised almost $30,000 to help sick and injured children suffering from burns related injuries.

“Across its eight years the event has contributed more than $300,000 to vital burns treatment and research helping countless young Queenslanders.

“Each year the Royal Children’s Hospital treats more than 700 children suffering from burns and related injuries, and each year the men and women of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services raise funds to help them.”
