Paws for thought this Sunday

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
The Honourable John McVeigh

Thousands of dog lovers will be marching this Sunday 18 May to mark the annual Million Paws Walk – RSPCA’s largest fundraiser to fight animal cruelty.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said animal welfare was a responsibility for everyone, something the Queensland Government has taken on board with new legislation.

“Across Queensland about 20,000 proud dog owners are expected to gather and show their support for responsible pet ownership and helping animals in need,” Mr McVeigh said.

“By registering and taking part you’ll be helping the RSPCA in its mission to raise awareness of animal cruelty, but also help them to provide essential care, veterinary treatment, and food and shelter for more than 18,000 dogs they take in each year.

Mr McVeigh said unlike Labor, this Government had listened to Queenslanders who had expressed their strong concerns about penalties for violence against animals and taken action.

“Last year we made changes to the Animal Care and Protection Act (ACPA) to impose heavier penalties for animal cruelty offences from a maximum of $110,000 or two years imprisonment to $220,000 or three years imprisonment,” he said.

“Following this, we have also announced a tough new offence to protect Queensland’s animals against cruelty.

“People who torture animals and intentionally inflict severe pain and suffering upon an animal will now face up to seven years in jail.

“The Newman Government is serious about stopping animal cruelty and the changes we have made sends clear messages to the community and courts that severe penalties should apply to both punish and deter this terrible behaviour.

“Just like people, animals deserve to have a happy, healthy life.”

All dogs, regardless of breed, size or age, are welcome on Sunday’s walk, as long as they are fully vaccinated, friendly and registered with the local council.
