The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Additional policing staff, better training for officers, and targeted programs for diverse communities are delivering results for the thousands of Queenslanders within the multicultural community.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said Queensland’s multicultural community was being better served by the Government’s continued drive to revitalise frontline services.

“The former Labor Government did not make any effort to proactively engage with Queensland’s multicultural community, but we are changing that,” Mr Dempsey said.

“The Queensland Cultural Diversity Roundtable is an initiative of the Newman Government chaired by Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robert Cavallucci, to drive change together with the multicultural community.

“The Queensland Police Service is committed to working closely with every community to deliver better services for every Queenslander.”

Mr Dempsey said the LNP Government was delivering for multicultural Queenslanders through more support officers for the Torres Strait and better training for Police Liaison Officers.

“We’re delivering 31 Torres Strait Island Police Support Officers to Far North Queensland, and currently 14 officers are receiving specialised training at the Queensland Police Academy,” he said.

“The Queensland Police Service has more than 160 Police Liaison Officers and 52 Cross Cultural Liaison Officers working everyday to revitalise frontline services for the multicultural community.

“The South Brisbane District has undertaken to boost the resources available to its community by training Police Liaison Officers to deliver home security audits for local families.

“The Queensland Police Service’s Cultural Support Unit is a dedicated team which works each day to provide information and training to frontline officers to better deliver police services to the diverse communities of Queensland.

“The role of police officer is like no other, so we have to prepare our officers like none other and that is why we’re committed to better support and training for officers working with multicultural communities.”
