G20 Police Operations Centre Launched

Hundreds of personnel from organisations across Queensland and Australia will direct Queensland’s largest police operation from a new purpose-built G20 Police Operations Centre launched today.

Minister for Police Jack Dempsey and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP said the facility would allow both Commonwealth and Queensland officers to direct operations with ease.

“The Queensland Police Service will be undertaking Operation Southern Cross, the largest and most complex in the organisation’s 150 year history,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Part of that operation will see almost 6,000 officers involved in policing both the Finance Minister’s Meeting in Cairns and Leaders’ Summit in Brisbane.

“The Police Operations Centre will be the nerve centre for all operations across Brisbane and South Bank as part of the G20.

“The Queensland Government alongside the Commonwealth is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all attendees to the meetings in Brisbane and Cairns.

“The G20 is the largest opportunity Queensland has had to showcase our abilities to the world, and I know the Queensland Police Service is up to the task.”

Mr Frydenberg said the Commonwealth has contributed funding toward the construction of the new Police Operations Centre.

“The G20 Leaders Summit will be the most significant meeting of world leaders Australia has ever hosted with over 4,000 delegates and 3,000 members of the world’s media attending, and it is crucial that we have the appropriate facilities, such as the Police Operations Centre, in place to support the safe and efficient running of the event. This is why the Commonwealth Government committed over $4.5 million toward the construction of this state of the art facility”, Mr Frydenberg said.
