The Commissioner of Queensland’s Fire and Emergency Services has been recognised with the Fellow Grade at the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) conference.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Jack Dempsey, congratulated Commissioner Johnson on behalf of the Government and all Queenslanders for receiving the significant industry fellowship.

“The Newman Government is committed to revitalising frontline services in Queensland, and we are doing so through the largest fire and emergency services budget in history,” Mr Dempsey said.

“The IFE is an international body that strives to improve practises and knowledge among professional firefighters and fire engineers. It’s a great honour and a sign of Mr Johnson’s long service that he has been awarded the Fellow Grade.

"The Fellow Grade has only been assigned to 28 IFE members in Australia, and is considered the IFE’s highest international honour."

Mr Dempsey said the fellowship recognised Mr Johnson’s extensive career and the many developments and initiatives he had spearheaded since joining the fire service in 1975.

“Mr Johnson held firefighter, officer and management positions throughout Queensland before becoming Commissioner in 2002,” he said.

“As Commissioner, he oversees a fire service that has gained world-wide recognition for its training and professionalism.

“Firefighters from overseas frequently visit Queensland to learn from our skilled experts, and Mr Johnson’s recognition is reflective of Queensland’s first-class and highly-regarded fire and emergency services.”

IFE Australia President Andrew Sharrad said the fellowship was an acknowledgment of Commissioner Johnson's many accomplishments.

“Chief Johnson’s award as a Fellow of IFE is well deserved,” Mr Sharrad said.

“Not only in recognition of his contribution to operational fire services and to professional fire engineering, but it is testament to his outstanding leadership in the community both in Queensland and throughout Australia – congratulations Lee.”

Mr Johnson has received several awards for his efforts, including the National Emergency Medal, National Medal and Clasps, Australian Fire Service Medal and Distinguished and Ethical Service Medal and Clasps.
