Opportunity knocks today

Countries and communities around the world are coming together to celebrate and recognise the achievements of women, to mark International Women’s Day.

Communities Minister Tracy Davis said Queensland women had even more reason to celebrate, with many already embracing the ‘Opportunity is Knocking’ theme.

“International Women’s Day celebrations will take place right across our great state and I encourage everyone to mark the day by attending an event,” Ms Davis said.

“This year we will also see Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge bathed in purple and green light, the official International Women’s Day colours.

“Queensland is a great state with great opportunity for women.

“That is increasingly the case in the tourism, agriculture, resources and construction sectors – the four pillars of the economy, which we promised at the election to grow.

Ms Davis attended the annual International Women’s Day Breakfast on Thursday 6 March, hosted by UN Women Australia.

“It was an honour to attend and sponsor the breakfast, which celebrated the achievements of women and girls,” she said.

“I am also pleased that the Queensland Government has provided support for the Black, Bold and Beautiful Indigenous Women’s Luncheon and the “Many Threads” Indigenous women’s exhibition in Cherbourg.

“Both events recognise the achievements and contributions of Indigenous women.

“Beyond International Women’s Day, women can still take advantage of the opportunities that come with growth in Queensland, which is now accelerating at a faster rate under the direction of this Government.”
