Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson

The racing industry is being urged to recognize its changing face this International Women’s Day. (8 March).

Racing Minister Steve Dickson said the Queensland Government was delivering its election promise to rebuild racing in the state, and women were now well represented across the industry, including a record number of female jockeys.

“Currently, we have 30 licensed apprentice jockeys in Queensland who are female, compared with 24 male apprentices and the Apprentice of the Year award also went to a woman” Mr Dickson said.

“Harness racing also has a strong showing of women among the ranks of drivers, with 12 female concession drivers - a third of all drivers and double the proportion of 2006.

“The girls are definitely making their presence felt, routinely winning races and also continuing to impress and win the confidence of trainers and owners.

“The economic benefit of the racing industry is huge, contributing $855 million to the state's economy and providing 30,000 Queenslanders with jobs.

“It’s also an important part of the tourism industry, which we promised at the election to grow as one of the four pillars of the economy.”

Australia’s first licensed female jockey, and current secretary of the Queensland Jockeys’ Association, Pam O’Neill said she received great satisfaction from seeing so many female faces.

“It’s really pleasing to see that we have a good many capable and talented women jockeys. It’s particularly satisfying to have such a large number of young female apprentices,” Ms O’Neill said.

“It’s not strength that enables you to control a horse. You are never going to be stronger than a horse. You have got to understand the horse, and know how to handle it.

“It’s a good industry to be in. If you are fair dinkum and willing to put in the effort, then you can make a decent living and you can travel far and wide.

“We have some excellent apprentices and some exceptionally good women jockeys here in Queensland. I think they would hold their own anywhere in the racing world – here in Australia or abroad.
