Queenslanders are being encouraged to nominate over the next fortnight for the 2014 Queensland Training Awards.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the awards demonstrate the improvements in training made by the Government and highlight the delivery of key election promises.

“We are revitalising frontline education services as promised and giving students and employers greater choice and access to quality training,” Mr Langbroek said.

“In the last financial year around 62,000 people in Queensland completed a certificate III qualification or higher through publicly funded training pathways.

“These graduates have many inspiring stories about how training has helped them succeed, achieve their goals and improve their lives. The awards aim to highlight these achievements.

“Labor ignored vocational education and training, but we know a strong system is essential to growing a four pillar economy and reducing unemployment.”

Mr Langbroek said the 2013 Vocational Student of the Year category winner Sarah Eden was one example of success and recognition discovered through the Queensland Training Awards.

“Sarah was school captain of St John's Anglican College, graduating with an OP2 in 2005. She is proof that high achieving academic students can succeed through a vocational education and training career pathway,” he said.

“Sarah initially enrolled to study law but changed direction after just two lectures and moved into a certificate course in nursing. After completing a diploma of nursing, Sarah won her award.

“She is now studying her Bachelor of Nursing and continues to work as an enrolled nurse at Greenslopes Hospital where Sarah also assists in delicate brain and orthopaedic surgery procedures.

Sarah Eden urged others who were considering entering Queensland Training Awards to apply.

“The awards were a great validation of my hard work,” Ms Eden said.

“I entered as an individual who wanted to promote the limitless possibilities of vocational training, particularly in nursing. I enjoyed participating in the program and also gained a great deal professionally from the experience.”

Mr Langbroek said there were 11 awards categories for individuals, employers and training providers.

Nominations close on March 21. For entry details and a full list of categories, visit www.qta.qld.gov.au or call 1800 660 207.
