Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Police Minister Jack Dempsey has welcomed the appeal against the sentence handed to Virgil Macquarie Power, lodged by the Queensland Police Service yesterday.

Last week 29-year-old Virgil Macquarie Power was sentenced to 240 hours community service and ordered to pay $24,000 in damages after pleading guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm against 23-year-old Michael Haubauer at the Laguna Jacks pub in September 2013.

Mr Haubauer received serious facial injuries during the unprovoked attack.

Mr Dempsey said the sentence was not in line with community expectations and did not set an adequate deterrent.

“The community was outraged by this horrific attack and rightly so, it was a sickening attack,” he said.

“I welcome the decision by the Queensland Police Service to appeal.”
