Trade mission to strengthen American alliance

Queensland will build on its already strong ties with the United States, when Premier Campbell Newman leads a trade and investment mission to Los Angeles, New York and Houston next month.

Speaking at today’s (6 February) welcoming of the 25th US Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Australia, Mr Newman said he would be accompanied by a group of Queensland businesses.

“The mission from March 6-15 is about strengthening the invaluable relationship between Queensland and our good friend and ally, the United States of America,” Mr Newman said.

“We promised Queenslanders at the election that we would grow the four pillars of the economy and this visit will help to deliver on that pledge.

“The US plays a major part in our resources sector and I will attend meetings to discuss the progress and opportunities in Queensland’s gas industry.

“I will also promote tourism and construction as well as the arts to find new opportunities and fly the flag for Queensland.

“This mission will also see the opening of the new Queensland Government North America office in Houston, Texas.

“It will represent Queensland’s North American interests and will be led by the State’s newly appointed North America Trade and Investment Commissioner Mr David Camerlengo.”

Mr Newman said a new Commissioner for South America has also been appointed.

“Santiago-based Trade and Investment Commissioner Mr Alejandro Pessagno will represent Queensland’s interests in South America,” he said.

“The Queensland Government is pro-business and forging new international partnerships is vital to our State’s prosperity and continuing to grow the economy.

“These new commissioner posts are part of the Government’s renewed push for Queensland into overseas markets, cementing our great State as an important part of the world economy.

“We’ve also strengthened the role of Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) by making it a statutory authority with businessman Mark Stockwell at the helm as Chairman.

“TIQ will be working harder than ever to assist Queensland businesses to make their mark on the world stage.”
