The old Redcliffe fire station will be transformed into a new volunteer and arts hub thanks to a partnership between the Newman Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Premier Campbell Newman today visited the old fire station at 395 Oxley Avenue with Redcliffe LNP candidate Kerri-Anne Dooley and Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland.

Mr Newman said the State Government would partner with Council to redevelop the site, contributing $400,000 towards the project as part of the LNP’s commitment to support local communities.

“There is a real need for more community space in the Redcliffe area,” Mr Newman said.

“My Government has a clear and positive plan to revitalise this State in fixing the mess left by Labor. We’re continuingly finding savings that can be reinvested into community projects like this one to support Redcliffe families.

“The central location of the old fire station means local community groups will be able to relocate to and access the space, making it easier for groups to continue their vital work.

“Families on the peninsula will benefit from transforming this heritage listed building into an accessible community hub, with organisations able to build their capacity and grow their services.”

Mr Sutherland said the redevelopment of the old fire station formed part of the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Cultural Strategy and would include a volunteer hub, art spaces, and a training centre.

“There will be a number of community groups breathing a sigh of relief that this project will now become a reality thanks to the partnership between the council and the State Government,” he said.

“The council is ready to tender for this project, and we expect the redevelopment to be completed within 12 months.”

Mr Newman said the State Government funding would fix the mess left behind by former Labor Federal Member for Petrie Yvette D’Ath.

“Families and community groups on the peninsula expressed their concern after it was revealed the former Federal Member made an empty promise about funding this project,” he said.

“I am delighted my Government has been able to work with the Mayor to secure funds for the project, something Ms D’Ath was unable to achieve in her six years as the Federal Labor member.

“The old fire station has long been an integral part of Redcliffe’s cultural heritage, and this redevelopment will ensure the facility reclaims its role in the local community again.”
