More Independence for Queensland schools

The Newman Government has welcomed the $70 million Independent Public Schools initiative launched today by the Federal Coalition Government. 

Minister for Education, Training & Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the Abbott Government’s announcement that 1,500 existing public schools would become Independent by 2017 would be celebrated by Queensland school communities. 

“Already there are 80 Independent Public Schools in Queensland that are enjoying a greater say in how their schools are run,” Mr Langbroek said. 

“They have more freedom to decide their direction and make decisions that benefit local students and communities. 

“They are forging a new path with increased autonomy to recruit teachers, manage resources and tailor their curriculum to the needs of their students. 

“The start of this school year marked the beginning of a new era for 54 of Queensland’s new Independent Public Schools, who joined the first 26 schools from last year. 

“We continue to have an overwhelming number of applications to become an Independent Public School. 

“The Federal Government’s announcement today will create more excitement amongst the Queensland state schools who are asking for greater autonomy and flexibility.” 

Mr Langbroek said the state and federal governments were listening to our schools who were tired of the former Labor government’s tired, dictatorship ways. 

“We believe parents, teachers and community members deserve greater input into how their schools are run,” he said. 

“By cutting red tape and removing layers of bureaucracy, school communities are empowered to make more decisions that impact directly on students’ learning. 

“Research shows that autonomy can improve school performance and student outcomes, which is why the Newman Government is investing $21 million in the Independent Public Schools initiative. 

“Under the Newman Government, each school has received $50,000 to assist with the change and an extra $50,000 in funding each year for administrative purposes,” he said. 

“Conservative Governments are committed to working with Principals, teachers, parents and the wider school community to deliver the very best education for Australian children.”
