The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek
Schools in Redcliffe are set to receive almost $1 million as part of the Newman Government’s Great Results Guarantee, delivering on the election promise to revitalise frontline services.
Premier Campbell Newman visited Humpybong State School and met Principal John Clegg to discuss how students there would benefit from the funding.
“Humpybong State School will receive almost $170,000 this year to lift student outcomes in literacy and numeracy,” Mr Newman said.
“Queensland is the only state in Australia that has given this money directly to schools and enabled the community to be involved in how it is spent.
“This is about being accountable, transparent and having an unwavering focus on achieving better student outcomes for Queenslanders.”
Humpybong State School Principal John Clegg said he was planning to use the money to fund additional Prep Teacher Aide hours to assist his youngest students to develop their language skills.
“Many students in Prep have speaking difficulties which, if not addressed, is the beginning of reading and writing difficulties,” Mr Clegg said.
“The problems need to be addressed as early as possible and this funding will enable us to do that.
“I’m also looking to extend learning support time for students who need it in the junior school and provide professional development for teachers to improve numeracy teaching strategies.”
While touring the school, Mr Newman and Mr Langbroek also inspected maintenance issues that were being fixed thanks to the government’s $300 million Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund.
“Humpybong has received $314,181 to address their maintenance backlog, part of a total $2.2 million that went to all Redcliffe schools,” Mr Langbroek said.
“Labor’s legacy was more than 1,200 schools left in a state of disrepair, with ripped carpet, peeling paint and broken windows.
“We’re working hard to clean up Labor’s mess and make Queensland schools a place of pride for students to learn and communities to gather.
“The Newman Government is absolutely committed to ensuring that all students, not just those in Redcliffe, have access to a quality education experience for generations to come.”
