Additional resources and new technology for Queensland officers

Queensland families will be even safer and frontline police will be even more effective thanks to the boosted roll out and upgrade of the world leading QLiTE mobile technology program.

Thousands of Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers and the communities they serve will benefit from the introduction of the new QLiTE v2 from January 2015.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey joined QPS officers to demonstrate the new iPad technology which will improve response times for police and allow them to spend more time on the frontline.

“Under Labor we saw officers lacking the equipment they needed on the beat to improve responses to you and your family and we set about changing that,” Mr Dempsey said.

“In a little over two years the Queensland Government has added an additional 850 officers to the beat, and invested in cutting edge technology to deliver the best policing in Australia.

“The QLiTE program developed here in Queensland gives police access to information on offenders, vehicles and cases at their fingertips via an iPad, and it is improving police responses.

“Officers with access to an iPad or iPhone have cut down red tape and saved up to 30 minutes per shift. That time is going back into frontline policing and keeping families safe.

“We recognise the importance of this technology and that is why we are committing to an upgrade to version 2 of QLiTE and only the LNP is delivering this program and working for a safer Queensland.

“It’s only because we’ve worked hard and set the right financial foundations that we can afford to provide police with the equipment they need.”

Mr Dempsey said the LNP Government had exceeded its target of rolling out the QLiTE device to officers right across Queensland.

“Earlier this year the LNP committed to rolling out 1,750 devices to officers on the beat and as of December we have in fact rolled out 2,850 devices,” Mr Dempsey said.

“We have exceeded our target and enabled our additional officers right across Queensland to deliver better services to families through cutting edge crime-busting technology.

“There is still work to be done to deliver safer communities and only our strong LNP team will ensure Queensland stays on track to secure a bright future.”

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said QLiTE is internationally recognised technology that is helping to transform the service.

“The project has been recently recognised with a Merit Award at the prestigious Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards in Jakarta and that follows awards at both the Queensland and National iAwards,” Mr Stewart said.

“QLiTE employs a simple interface enabling officers to quickly confirm person or vehicle identity, identify risks to themselves or the community, and to take appropriate action.

“The technology is being used by officers and last month we saw 493,000 vehicle searches conducted, 202,000 Person Records and 19,000 Street Checks created.

“QLiTE was developed in consultation with frontline officers and it continues to be developed. New functionality will be rolled out later this month to provide officers with the ability to issue and record ‘directions’ in the field.”
