Book now for a cracker of a Christmas camping holiday

Queenslanders are being urged to book their summer campsites now and take advantage of our national parks, which are now more accessible to families than ever.

Minister for National Parks Steve Dickson said camping was a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy the state’s natural beauty, and the Newman LNP Government’s strong plan to increase tourism had created new opportunities.

“Queensland has a variety of national parks and State forests and we are continuing to improve accessibility so that more people can enjoy our parks over summer,” Mr Dickson said.

“A quarter of annual camping trips take place over the summer holidays and the Christmas and New Year period is our busiest time, so planning is a must.

“Labor closed up many of our national parks and ignored tourism, but all Queensland families have the right to enjoy them and our strong plan is ensuring it happens in a sustainable way.”

Mr Dickson said more than 113,942 campers stayed in National Parks between December and February last summer, about 17,000 more than the year before.

“Campers stayed more than 345,000 nights, with Fraser Island, Inskip and Cooloola the most popular destinations, hosting 47 per cent of campers,” he said.

“This year already more than 22,000 people have already booked their summer campsites, with the national park campgrounds at Bribie, Moreton and Fraser islands and Cooloola already close to fully booked.”

Mr Dickson said camping credits made wonderful gifts for family and friends.

“Camping is incredible value because all you’ll pay for a site is $5.75 per person, or $23 per night for a family of two adults and up to six children,” Mr Dickson said.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said camping was a family tradition for generations of Australians. 

“Our wonderful natural attractions have also been discovered by international visitors who look for a real Aussie experience,” Mr Gschwind said.
