Master teachers for QLD classrooms

Highly skilled and experienced teachers are being encouraged to apply for one of 300 newly created positions as master teachers in Queensland state schools.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the recruitment drive for 300 master teachers was part of the Queensland Government’s $535 million Great teachers = Great results action plan and delivered on the election promise to revitalise frontline services.

“The Can-Do LNP Government has a relentless focus on achieving better student outcomes, and boosting teacher quality is central to that goal,” Mr Langbroek said.

“We know that one of the most important factors in a student’s education is the teacher standing at the front of the classroom, which is why we are investing $135 million to create 300 new master teacher positions in Queensland state schools.

“This is about recognising our best teachers and putting them in schools that need them the most, so that all of our kids are given every opportunity to have a bright future.”

Mr Langbroek said that the new team of master teachers would hit the ground running in schools from 2015.

 “From next year, master teachers would undertake the role in individual schools, or a cluster of schools, across the state for a period of three years,” he said.

“Rather than working directly with children in the classroom, master teachers will work with teachers to analyse student data, develop and implement new strategies and enhance teacher practice.

“They will help schools to embed literacy and numeracy learning across the curriculum, provide coaching and guidance for teachers in the classroom, and align teacher professional development with student needs.

“Approximately two thirds of master teachers will be posted in primary schools, where they will have the important task of building strong literacy and numeracy foundations to help to boost student performance in the later years.

“Primary schools selected to host a master teacher will also receive a resource package of up to $75,000 over the next three years to support early literacy and numeracy learning.”

Applicants must hold full registration or current provisional registration with eligibility for full registration, as a teacher in Queensland.
