Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Jack Dempsey

The Queensland Government has commissioned an independent review of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ (QFES) and Public Safety Business Agency’s (PSBA) handling of sexual harassment and workplace bullying.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey said the review would ensure the integrity of the organisation and the safety of its staff.

Former Director-General of the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Ms Margaret Allison will head the review.

“Our Fire and Emergency Services do an exemplary job of keeping our communities safe but we also want to make sure staff themselves feel safe and comfortable in their work environment,” Minister Dempsey said.

“This Government has a zero-tolerance approach to sexual misconduct and workplace bullying and we’re determined to stamp it out.

“The review will determine the prevalence of any cultural or organisational issues that could foster gender discrimination, sexual harassment and workplace bullying and the adequacy of action taken to prevent any incidents.

“Every employee, whether at work or at home, shouldn’t fear being harassed, intimidated or bullied by another staff member.

“In the past seven years the number of female firefighters has doubled and we want to see that number grow even more.

“Many have risen to senior positions, with 17 female officers attaining the rank of Senior Firefighter while four have attained the rank of Station Officer.”

Ms Allison will make recommendations on any legislative, administrative and organisational changes that will promote integrity and an ethical culture in the Fire and Emergency Services.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Lee Johnson supported the review.

“Our organisation has zero tolerance to workplace bullying and harassment and any changes that can be made to uphold the integrity of our organisation will be accepted," Commissioner Johnson said.

"We continue to build a professional work environment for all employees and I want to make it clear that those who don't uphold our Code of Conduct are not welcome in our organisation."

United Firefighters Union Queensland State Secretary John Oliver said all firefighters deserved equality in the workplace.

"The union is opposed to any form of discrimination, sexual harassment, or workplace bullying and supports steps to ensure that it does not occur within the fire service," Mr Oliver said.

The review will commence immediately and be completed by the end of the year.
