Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson

Queensland racing is positioned to put in a strong performance in 2014, with more race meetings and more prizemoney than ever before.

Racing Minister Steve Dickson said the Newman Government’s commitment to rebuild the racing industry in Queensland would pay dividends over the coming year.

“The year started well with the staging of another successful Magic Millions thoroughbred sales and race day on the Gold Coast”, Mr Dickson said.

“The economic benefit of the racing industry is huge, contributing $855 million to the state's economy and providing 30,000 Queenslanders with jobs.

“That’s why the Newman Government is ensuring it continues to have good, strong foundations.”

Mr Dickson said country racing, which had been left to stagnate under the Labor Government, had benefited from a boost in funding and a much-needed increase in prizemoney.

“This year we will continue the initiative to support country racing, with a further $1 million in funding enabling20 additional meetings to be held”, Mr Dickson said.

“The rollout of projects as part of the five-year $110 million Racing Industry Capital Development Scheme will continue, including further work associated with the redevelopment of the Gold Coast Turf Club.”

Mr Dickson said the establishment of the Queensland All Codes Racing Industry Board, and three code specific control boards provided the industry with the best structure to progress.

“The new boards, together with the creation of a Racing Disciplinary Board and Racing Integrity Commissioner will ensure good governance and integrity to the industry,” he said.

Racing Queensland chairman Kevin Dixon said the industry seemed more optimistic about its future than it had been in the past.

"We have seen a real resurgence in interest and participation levels in thoroughbred racing in the country and in the greyhound and harness codes across the board,” Mr Dixon said.

"The financial results of the Magic Millions are a good indication that 2014 will be prosperous.”
