    Attorney-General Orders Appeals

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie has instructed the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal the following sentences:

    • A child sex offender, handed down in the District Court at Maroochydore on 13 January 2014
    • Nathan Levy and Steve Drobny, handed down in the District Court at Hervey Bay on 22 January 2014

The child sex offender was convicted of eight serious offences of a sexual nature involving the abuse of an eight year old child. The offender was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment to be released after serving 9 months in custody.

Nathan Levy and Steve Drobny were convicted of violent offences relating to a vicious assault on a taxi-driver, which left the victim with permanent injuries.

Nathan Levy was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment but was released immediately on parole.

Steve Drobny was convicted of assault occasioning bodily harm in company for his role in the attack and was placed on a 150 hour community service order.

The Attorney-General has advised Crown Prosecutors that he is of the view that the sentences in these matters is manifestly inadequate, is not in line with community expectations, does not set an adequate deterrent and must be appealed.
