New partnership delivers for seniors

Council of the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ) has been selected to play an important role in representing the interests of older people across the state.

Communities Minister Tracy Davis said COTAQ would receive $375,000 over three years through an innovative Government partnership, the Seniors Advocacy and Research Initiative.

“This funding will allow COTAQ to work with non-government organisations who are delivering quality frontline services to older people, fulfilling an important election commitment,” Ms Davis said

“COTAQ will also provide input into the development and implementation of State Government policies, programs and priorities for seniors.

“Through this innovative partnership, older people can expect improvements in the way they receive information about Queensland Government initiatives that affect them.

“The Newman Government values Queensland’s seniors and the contribution they make to our communities.”

Ms Davis announced the beginning of the competitive tender process for this peak funding in August 2013.

“Unlike the former Labor Government which historically funded the most vocal groups, we have used an open and transparent tender process to select the best organisation to partner with, to improve frontline services for seniors,” she said.

“This new partnership replaces previous funding arrangements with the Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League.”

Ms Davis said the seniors sector and population was growing in size, diversity and influence.

“We understand that seniors will benefit from receiving information on government decisions, policies, services and programs from a well-connected and trusted peak body,” she said.

COTAQ also receives Newman Government funding to collaboratively plan, run and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities across the state.
