Queenslanders who have been advocates for reconciliation have the opportunity to be recognised for their endeavours, with nominations for the 2014 Queensland Reconciliation Awards now open.

Premier Campbell Newman announced that Queensland rugby hero Johnathan Thurston will again act as ambassador for the awards.

“There are many businesses, community organisations, educational institutions and partnerships that respect and recognise reconciliation in Queensland,” Mr Newman said.

“They could be building cross-cultural understanding through employment or training initiatives, education, partnerships or engaging their local community.

“There are many deserving of recognition and I encourage you to nominate today.

“Over the last 11 years, we have recognised more than 150 outstanding initiatives demonstrating reconciliation in action.

“Some of these projects are not only making a significant impact in local communities, but stimulating change across Queensland and Australia.

“I would like to thank Johnathan Thurston for continuing his role as award ambassador and his unwavering commitment to honouring the history and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Johnathan Thurston, captain of the North Queensland Cowboys, has been the award ambassador since 2013.

“It was a great honour to be asked to take on the role as ambassador for the Queensland Reconciliation Awards,” Mr Thurston said.

“I’m very proud to represent the awards and their work in recognising the commitment, initiative and innovation that enriches our Indigenous community.

“It is a cause that is very close to my heart and one that I devote as much time as I can to during the rugby league season.”

A total of $25,000 in prize money is available across the five award categories of Business, Community, Education, Partnership and the Premier’s Reconciliation Award.

Nominations close Monday 3 March 2014.
