Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie has welcomed the appointment of Queensland’s new Chief Magistrate, The Honourable Tim Carmody.

Mr Bleijie said Mr Carmody would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role.

“Tim Carmody has an extremely diverse background which will serve him and the court well,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Originally a police officer, he is a former Family Court Judge, an adjunct professor of law at Queensland University of Technology and was Queensland’s Crime Commissioner from 1998 to 2002.

“Earlier this year, he headed the Child Protection Commission of Inquiry – the most comprehensive review of the child protection system in Queensland’s history.

“Thanks to Mr Carmody’s work, the Newman Government now has a roadmap to make Queensland the safest place to raise a child.

“His unique blend of practical and legal experience made him the ideal choice and Executive Council approved his latest and very important role today.

“Mr Carmody will also be sworn in as a Judge of the District Court and will formally take over from current Chief Magistrate Brendan Butler on 16th of September.

“His Honour, Brendan Butler has served his five year term with great distinction and I thank him for his hard and dedicated work. He will soon return to his role as a District Court Judge.”
