Birdsville Races to boost tourism

Outback Queensland is set to receive a significant tourism boost as thousands of visitors flock to Birdsville to experience the region’s iconic racing event which begins tomorrow (6 September).

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games said the popular outback event was a highlight on Queensland’s major event calendar.

“Last year the Newman Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), added the Birdsville Races to Queensland’s major event calendar, providing additional support in recognition of the event’s ability to drive significant economic and social benefits for Outback Queensland,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Events like the Birdsville Races are a fantastic drawcard for tourists and form part of TEQ’s ‘Outback Queensland Eventures’ campaign, a joint initiative with the Outback Queensland Tourism Association to promote events and tourism experiences throughout the region.

“Since launching the initiative earlier this year, more than 3,400 people have joined with me and made an ‘Outback Promise’ to visit our unique Outback.

“The Birdsville Races are a fantastic opportunity for visitors to experience Outback Queensland, each year seeing the town swell from around 100 people to more than 6000.

“Events are the lifeblood of many Outback towns, attracting visitors, boosting community spirit, contributing to the region’s economy and supporting local jobs.”

Supporting events in Outback Queensland is part of the Newman Government’s commitment to reach $30 billion in annual overnight visitor expenditure by 2020.

In the year ended March 2013 Outback Queensland welcomed 483,000 international and domestic visitors.

The Birdsville Races runs on 6 and 7 September 2013.
