Attorney-General and Minister for Justice
The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie

Queensland’s Drink Safe Precinct trial has been extended until mid-next year, ensuring the party precincts are covered during the festive season.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said it was important that the extension was offered while the 24-month evaluation was finalised.

“The Schoolies, Christmas and New Year’s period is the busiest time of the year, so it is wise to keep the precincts open during this time,” Mr Bleijie said.

“While we continue to assess the trial, the community groups involved should have access to additional funding and the community should be able to access the benefits.

“$531,441 will go towards organisations such as Chill Out Zone, Chaplain Watch, Anglicare and Townsville Street Chaplains so they can continue their rest and recovery services.

“These groups are at the coal face night in, night out and I thank them for their ongoing dedication to the trial.

“The precincts in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Townsville and will now continue until at least June 2014.

“I have received positive feedback about the high-visibility police presence and collaboration of everyone involved in the precincts.

“While the DSP concept has merit, it is important we get this right which is why we want to consider the final report to ensure we have the best model possible.

“We are working hard with the industry to ensure that safety is number one.

“This government makes decisions based on evidence and community consultation.

“We are committed to making Queensland a safe place for people to go out and enjoy themselves.
