$3.4 million for Queensland grass-roots environment projects

The Newman Government has given a helping hand to dozens of grass-roots environmental organisations for projects that improve their local area.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell today announced round two recipients of Everyone’s Environment grants which will help tackle environmental degradation.

“After an overwhelming response from dedicated community groups, 83 projects across the state will share in $3.4 million,” Mr Powell said.

“Projects including getting rid of feral pigs in Cuttaburra, improving the Whitsunday wetlands, monitoring impacts from the floods in central Queensland and enhancing creeks and waterways in south east Queensland.

“The Newman Government is looking forward to seeing real results on the ground courtesy of these grants, which will help dozens of organisations get environmental projects up and running for the benefit of local communities.”

A total of 119 applications were lodged for round two funding, and applications for round three of the Everyone’s Environment grants program will open in 2014.

In coming weeks, an extension of the grants will be announced to include heritage projects across Queensland.

The program will help eligible owners and community groups carry out projects that support conservation, heritage interpretation, education and tourism opportunities for Queensland state heritage places.

More information about the Everyone’s Environment program is available at www.ehp.qld.gov.au
