The Newman Government has granted national charity Youngcare land on Brisbane’s northside to build eight new apartments that will deliver a better life for young adults with disabilities.

Member for Everton and Minister for Housing Tim Mander said the development at 1 Leitchs Road, Albany Creek highlighted the benefits of collaboration between the not-for-profit sector and government.

“This land will deliver age-appropriate housing for Queenslanders living with a disability that sees them require in-home care and support,” Mr Mander said.

“Everyone deserves a fair go and a place to call home that connects them to the community.

“The new development will be home to people with disabilities like Multiple Sclerosis or Acquired Brain Injuries that make independent living difficult.”

Youngcare General Manager Anna Cox said there was a dire nationwide shortage of appropriate housing for young people with 24/7 care needs.

“I think most people agree that a young person living in aged care is a national tragedy,” Mrs Cox said.

“Governments and charities cannot solve this issue alone, we need to work together to deliver housing options for young people with disabilities.”

“Now the land has been granted, Youngcare will start the design process, in consultation with the local community,” Mrs Cox said.

“Youngcare has always collaborated with architects to ensure the housing we deliver is a reflection of its community context and feels like home.”

Mrs Cox said it was through grants like this Youngcare could showcase new models of housing so young people with a disability have a brighter future.
