The Honourable Jeff Seeney

Townsville’s economy will receive a major boost after amendments to the Development Scheme for the Townsville State Development Area (SDA) were approved by the Governor-in-Council today.

Acting Premier Jeff Seeney said the amendments were the result of a comprehensive review of the Development Scheme by the Coordinator-General to ensure it maximised the potential for investment in the SDA.

“Townsville is key to Queensland’s continued growth and is a major hub for development in the state’s north,” Mr Seeney said.

“The SDA aims to attract industry to help the Townsville region achieve its potential as a centre for industry of regional, state and national significance, and in particular to attract industry associated with the Port of Townsville.

“The new Development Scheme will provide greater development certainty to existing land owners as well as prospective proponents who may be looking to develop in the SDA.”

Mr Seeney said consultation on the development scheme changes had been undertaken from 18 March to 26 April this year.

He said positive feedback was received from Townsville City Council, the Port of Townsville and other major stakeholders.

The 4,912 hectare SDA, which was originally declared in 2003, is located about six kilometres south-east of the Townsville Central Business District.

Mr Seeney said over the past 18 months the Office of the Coordinator-General had undertaken detailed investigations in the TSDA including environmental, economic and flooding investigations.

He said the Coordinator-General released the Development Opportunities Strategy for the TSDA in February 2013.

“The Development Opportunities Strategy and extensive public and stakeholder consultation on the draft amendments earlier this year have informed the final changes to the Development Scheme.

“I look forward look forward to facilitating greater economic development in the SDA.

“The Coordinator-General’s office is already holding pre-lodgement discussions with a number of proponents about development proposals, which is proof industry is just as keen to boost Townsville’s economic development.”
