The scene is set for Maroochydore City Centre to become a leading business, community services and employment hub for the Sunshine Coast after the Queensland Government’s declaration of a Priority Development Area (PDA).

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney congratulated Sunshine Coast Council for its hard work in identifying the site and supporting Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) to reach this milestone.

“This PDA is set to reinvigorate Maroochydore, while boosting local business and jobs,” Mr Seeney said.

“EDQ will now work closely with Sunshine Coast Council to prepare the development scheme for the PDA, which will outline the development that will occur to transform the area.

“The preparation of the development scheme is a 12 month process and during this time the community will have the opportunity to comment on the draft documents to ensure any plans for the Maroochydore City Centre PDA complement their expectations.

“In the meantime the Interim Land Use Plan (ILUP) is now in place for the next 12 months to enable development to be considered on key sites within the PDA.”

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the Maroochydore City Centre PDA was approximately 60 hectares in size comprising local and state government owned land and included the Horton Park Golf Club site.

“When completed, the Maroochydore City Centre PDA Development Scheme will also detail the infrastructure that will be required to support all development that will occur throughout the life of the project,” Ms Simpson said.

“Ultimately the development scheme will reinforce the PDA as an area of community focus, providing strong investment opportunities, boosting tourism and local business and creating more jobs for Queenslanders.”

"I support the opportunity for business to have certainty and to move forward on this plan. Maroochydore is a key business centre with exciting opportunities."

Sunshine Coast Acting Mayor Cr Chris Thompson said the future of Maroochydore becoming the region’s capital was one step closer with the State Government’s PDA declaration.

“This is a major boost for the Maroochydore City Centre and investment confidence in our region, which is what the region will be seeking to achieve through its new economic development strategy,” Cr Thompson said.

“Council’s $42 million investment to acquire the 53-hectare Horton Park Golf Club site will allow for the building of much needed infrastructure, enable council to rectify current and future transport issues in Maroochydore and over time develop a civic, commercial, cultural and recreational core for the region.

“It is important that we now finalise the Maroochydore City Centre PDA Development Scheme to attract strong investment, detail productive land usage and deliver key regional infrastructure including roads, services, community and cultural spaces together with land for business investment.

“The Maroochydore City Centre will be delivered over the next 20 years, with early staging intended to deliver major roadways and community infrastructure.”
