More than 100 Mary Valley tenants have registered their interest in buying their rental properties as part of the Newman Government’s bid to restore the region to its former glory.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the level of tenant interest showed plenty of people wanted the chance to have a permanent lifestyle in the Mary Valley.

“The Newman Government is committed to ensuring a viable economic future for the Mary Valley and it’s heartening to see such a strong response from tenants who are as keen as we are to get the region back on track,” Mr Seeney said.

“It’s clear people are starting to see the Mary Valley as a desirable place to live with a viable agriculture-based economy.

“The growing interest in the Mary Valley properties is a good sign for the future of the community.”

Mr Seeney said more than 250 tenants in government-owned housing were offered the opportunity to buy their rental properties under the scheme, with around 100 registrations of interest lodged up until  Friday afternoon’s deadline.

“The next step will be for principal agent Oliver Hume Real Estate Group to assess the applications to determine tenant eligibility prior to continuing with the scheme,” he said.

“Following that, an independent valuer will be appointed to undertake a market valuation of properties and eligible tenants will be advised of the purchase price.

“It is expected offers to proceed to purchase will be made to eligible tenants from July onwards.

“Properties for which tenants do not register an interest in purchasing will be included in the broader divestment program for the Mary Valley Economic Development Strategy.

“Our goal is to return government-owned properties in the region to private ownership in a number of ways, including open market sales by auction or tender and as part of the economic development program.”
