Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts
The Honourable Ian Walker

The Newman Government will spend $9 million over five years on dementia research, as part of its commitment to support innovation in Queensland’s science industries.

Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts Ian Walker said the 2013-14 State Budget confirmed the Newman Government’s commitment to building a creative economy that enhances Queensland’s resilience.

Mr Walker said his department last year promised to invest in key priorities that would benefit Queenslanders, while also looking at better ways to engage with experts in other sectors.

“This year’s Budget delivers and builds on that promise,” Mr Walker said.

“I’m especially pleased that we’ve been able to make an investment of $9 million over five years to support the critical research into aging dementia that is being undertaken by the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland.”

“This will translate into tangible health outcomes for Queenslanders. Earlier diagnosis and better treatment options for those affected will not only benefit those individuals and their families, but will provide benefits for all Queenslanders through savings to our health system.”

Mr Walker said the $862 million DSITIA budget would help to build a clever, creative and connected Queensland.

“Our achievements in 2012 included awarding the prestigious $1.25 million Premier’s Science Fellowship for advance diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis and establishing consultative advisory groups, such as the ICT Engagement Group,” he said.

Mr Walker said his Department was developing a comprehensive plan for Queensland Government information and communication technology (ICT).

“This will play a significant role in ensuring technology enables better outcomes and a more resilient Queensland,” he said.

“This Budget also continues our agenda of reshaping ICT within the Queensland Government and implementing innovative strategies that contribute to an enhanced, creative economy in Queensland.”
