The Honourable Tim Nicholls

Treasurer and Minister for Trade Tim Nicholls today welcomed the opportunity to be part of a high level business, community and government group working to make the most of opportunities associated with the G20 meeting in Brisbane next year.

Mr Nicholls is the Queensland Government representative on the Q20 group which will work to ensure the State reaps benefits from the G20 summit in 2014.

“Brisbane and Cairns will both be front and centre next year when leaders from the world’s biggest economies gather on our shores,” Mr Nicholls said.

Cairns will host a G20 Finance Ministers and Central Banks Governors’ meeting in September next year, while Brisbane will host the G20 Leaders’ summit.

“The Q20 brings prominent businesspeople, government and community representatives together to work on a strategy to ensure Queensland capitalises on this opportunity.

“I look forward to working with group chair Catherine Tanna, chairman of BG Australia, as the Queensland Government’s Q20 representative.”

Mr Nicholls said the positive impact of the G20 Summit would be felt right across the State’s economy, with up to 25 world leaders, seven heads of international organisations, 4000 delegates and 3000 domestic and international media attending.

“Images of our beautiful State will be broadcast across the world and we want to leverage off the opportunity this presents,” he said.

“We also want to promote business and trade relationships with key decision-makers, so that Queensland businesses and the economy benefit from this event in the long-term.

“In coming years Queensland is going to be the engine room of the Australian economy, with growth averaging four per cent over the Budget year and the forward estimates.

“Queensland is the ideal place to visit, learn and do business and I am looking forward to working with some of the State’s best and brightest to capitalise on the great opportunity the G20 Summit presents our great State.”
